Hardwood is replacing laminates and other materials as the flooring of choice in 2016. Its renewed popularity has resulted in new trends that open up a wide range of design possibilities for homeowners.
Grey tones, darker colours that bring out the grain of the wood and wider planks are among the most dominant trends in hardwood flooring, according to the World Flooring Association
While the traditional narrow planks are still a classic choice, many homeowners are opting for wider planks – 5 to 7 inches, up to 12 inches wide. Wider planks serve to visually open a small space and are ideal for living rooms and bedrooms. Today’s hardwood also come in longer lengths, which result in a smoother appearance with fewer seams.
Colours are also changing. One of the hottest trends is to the grey palette which brings out the natural grain of the wood and complements most decors. Popular in American west coast homes – think beach houses – the trend has gained traction throughout North America.
On the other end of the colour spectrum are the darker, ebony-type floors, designed to make a contemporary statement. To create a sleek, sophisticated look, dark hardwoods such as oak, cherry, and walnut fit the bill perfectly.
The vintage look is still trending in hardwood, as are white-washed or pickled effects, wire-brushed finishes and reclaimed or salvaged flooring.
Whatever your design preference, today’s advances in hardwood flooring offer a range of choices to suit every decor and lifestyle.
