Homeowners looking to update a dated bathroom or drab powder room can draw inspiration from the 2016 Design Trends Survey conducted by the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA). According to the survey of bathroom designers, transitional bathrooms are the top trend in bathroom design today, blending the traditional with contemporary to create a clean, modern style,
Neutral colour palettes also dominate today’s bathroom designs, with white being the most popular fixture colour and whites and greys being the most popular overall colour schemes. Beige/bone colours are slightly less popular, but still recommended by 65 per cent of NKBA members surveyed.
Other trends in vogue this year include:
- Open shelving, floating vanities and wall-hung toilets
- Built-in storage
- Undermount sinks
- Freestanding tubs
- Shower amenities such as hand showers and shower lighting
- Polished chrome faucet finishes
With an aging population, it makes sense that accessibility features, like comfort-height toilets and vanities, shower rails and grab bars are being incorporated into the majority of bathroom renovations today.
Other features that are trending include: electric heated floors; easy maintenance features; one-piece toilets; towel warmers; humidity-sensing fans; steam showers; smart toilets/bidets; and WaterSense® toilets and faucets.
Undermount sinks remain the most popular sink style, specified by 92 percent of respondents, followed by vessel sinks. Wood vanities and wall-mount vanities are also trends to look for in 2016.
