Splurge or Save - Kitchen Renovations
Some would say the heart of any home is the kitchen, and ideally you want the space to reflect what is most important to you. Whether you’re a bustling family of five in need of more storage, or an amateur chef looking to splurge on top-of-the-line appliances, it’s important to consider how you plan to allocate your budget.
“Splurge” statement pieces elevate the look, while “save” pieces fill out your design and rescue the budget (and often secretly do a lot of the heavy lifting). To help you know how to best spend your design dollar, here are some ways to splurge and and save your way to a beautiful kitchen.
Cabinets – Splurge!
We always recommend investing in your kitchen cabinetry. Cabinets are the most impactful element of the kitchen, and beautiful cabinets can elevate your entire kitchen remodel. They also take up the most visual space in the room, so don’t cut corners here!
Backsplash – Save!
Expensive tile can eat up your budget quickly, and while it can be beautiful, it won’t have as large of an impact as your cabinets or countertop. If you need to cut costs, opt for more price-conscious options like tile or glass that can still give you a stylish and modern look.
Countertops – Splurge!
Aside from cabinetry, the next most important element of your kitchen remodel is the countertops. While less expensive materials (like laminate or wood) may give you the look you’re trying to achieve, they may not be the most durable. Countertops need to be able to withstand everyday accidents like spills and dishes knocking over, so investing in something that will last is crucial.
Lighting – Save!
While lighting is important in any space, it is especially important in the kitchen. However, having adequate lighting doesn’t need to be expensive. Stylish options can be found to accommodate any budget with very little compromise. What is most important is having the right balance of ambient and task lighting to maximize the space.
Hardware – Splurge!
Since cabinet knobs, pulls and handles are used all the time it’s worth it to invest in ones that feel good and are top quality. Whatever you touch regularly in a house should feel good. Also, when your hardware looks dated and damaged it can make your whole kitchen feel that way. Given that the investment is relatively small, splurge on the best looking and best quality hardware you can find.
Appliances – Depends!
For kitchen appliances, we typically recommend going for options that make the most sense in your lifestyle. Commercial grade appliances are stunning! However, if the budget is unrealistic for your remodel, there are many similar appliances you can find at more affordable prices. If cooking is not a passion of yours, we’d recommend saving on your kitchen appliances.
