Pantone Colour of the Year: Very Peri
While Pantone’s colours of the year in 2021 were said to be a sign of the times, it didn’t change the fact that they weren’t exactly everyone’s cup of tea — especially when it came to incorporating them into the home. Sure, Ultimate Gray goes with pretty much everything. But Illuminating, an uplifting yellow? That presents a serious challenge in interiors — and one not everyone’s up for.
While it’s not likely Pantone chose its 2022 colour of the year based on public opinion of years past, it does seem to have chosen a slightly more versatile hue for the new year.
This colour is all about celebrating newness, as well as its signaling of the merging of digital and physical lives. “Displaying a carefree confidence and a daring curiosity that animates our creative spirit, inquisitive and intriguing PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri helps us to embrace this altered landscape of possibilities, opening us up to a new vision as we rewrite our lives,” wrote the brand in a press release.
Very Peri feels modern and fresh — but in a hopeful, happy way that blends seamlessly into our changing homes. Despite its joyous look and innovative feel, however, it hasn’t yet permeated the decor market in a way that makes it easy to shop. This may be because Pantone actually invented the shade!
According to Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Colour Institute, Pantone created a new colour for the first time in the history of its Pantone Colour of the Year educational colour program this year.
This new hybrid of blue, red and purple has the merit of matching perfectly with a wide range of shades. The easiest combination is with white and soft tones of sand, camel and beige, but the one with the warmest tones of brown, from coffee to caramel and cocoa, is also very effective. Pantone has created four colour palettes to help you make the best decisions for your home.
Very Peri is not only a very versatile shade, but, thanks to its periwinkle blue base, is also good at instilling a sense of comfort and tranquility, and for this reason is highly recommended for rooms such as the living room, bedroom or study. Once you have decided on the room and the match that is right for you, the next decision to make is whether to try painting one or more of the walls in your home.
In choosing this saturated hue, Pantone has opened the way for a whole series of shades poised between purple and periwinkle blue. If you’re looking for a wow effect and aren’t afraid to depart from the minimalism that has been on trend for the last few years, why not play by layering different shades of the same color?
Very Peri fits well with different styles of decor: from industrial to Scandinavian style, from shabby chic to japandi, even reaching cottage core and cabin core. All you have to do is use it smartly, perhaps focusing on a single statement item, capable of capturing attention and changing the look of living rooms, bedrooms and kitchens.
