Wishing all a happy Canada Day. To mark the occasion, we’ve compiled some trivia for you – you know, so you can look good in front of the family this weekend.
Canada’s two national sports are Lacrosse and Hockey.
In 1994 Parliament passed the National Sports of Canada Act which declared lacrosse to be Canada’s “National Summer Sport”, with ice hockey as the “National Winter Sport”.
Recent surveys suggest that there may be as many as 2 million lakes in Canada.
About 8% of our 10 million Km2 is covered by fresh water – enough to flood the entire country to a depth of over 2 meters!
Our first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald, cheated death.
During the final negotiations of Confederation at the London Conference in December of 1866, Macdonald nearly died when he fell asleep with a candle still burning in his bedroom. Various historical accounts say that he woke to the smell of his own charred flesh and that his shoulder was badly burned by the flames, but kept it secret throughout the final negotiations.
Canada has the longest covered bridge in the world.
At 1282 feet long, the Hartland Bridge, located in Hartland, New Brunswick is the world’s longest covered bridge.
The world first anti-gravity suit is Canadian too!
Developed by a team led by Wilbur R. Franks at the University of Toronto in 1941, the suits were first used in 1942 during Operation Torch – the debut of mass involvement of US troops in the North African Campaign of WWII.
There are 39 National Parks, 8 National Park Reserves and 3 National Marine Conservation areas in Canada.
These areas cover approximately 328 198 km2 or about 3.3% of the total land area of Canada, representing 30 of the 39 natural regions. There is at least one park in every one of our 13 provinces and territories with a reported yearly attendance of 15.5 million people.
