You have every right to be concerned when considering buying a warranty. The many horror stories are true – often you’ve bought nothing more than a bunch of paper with tiny print.
Sometimes though, warranties are a smart purchase. You know that the range you just splurged on for your dream kitchen has a standard manufacturer’s warranty…what happens 2 or 3 months afterwards when the oven element refuses to turn on?
But first, a bit of perspective.
They Don’t Make ‘Em Like They Used To
When my grandfather opened Homeservice Club in 1961, we did not sell warranties. There was no point. However, with a shift to higher energy efficiency standards and globalization of parts manufacturing, appliances began to break more often. In an attempt to fill a gap in the market we watched as others started to sell warranties which were often owned by third party insurance companies that were supposed to back them when called upon. Great idea.
In theory.
Unfortunately, here in the real world insurance companies are often slow and unwilling to fulfill their end of the contract – in addition, third-party warranty companies are basically insurance companies using appliances to sell their policies. Traditional insurance companies use independent agents and have mostly good reputations, however, none of them are in the appliance repair business.
So what am I trying to tell you?
You’ve read the stories. Something bought online from a retailer in Chicago, shipped to Toronto with a warranty covered by a provider in Texas…or even worse, overseas. It never ends well.
All these third party warranty companies are is call centers. They are not technicians, and their staff probably don’t even know what questions to ask outside of their scripted responses.
We back our own warranties. You call with a problem, our trained service staff determine who to send you, and we show up to fix it. All without waiting for approval from a third party.
Do yourself a favour, NEVER buy a warranty from a company without a service department located in the same town. You are better off just taking your chances. Without actual service technicians, there will be huge delays, the product will either never be fixed or there could be exorbitant charges attached to the repair.
Do not buy an extended warranty from a company without a service department. Wishing for a product to work is not the same as fixing the product when it does fail.
Always read the fine print.
