Ontarians will celebrate the Civic Holiday on Monday, but not everybody will have the day off.
The Civic Holiday or Simcoe Day as it is also known in Ontario, is celebrated each year on the first Monday of August.
However, it has not been defined as a statutory holiday and is not mentioned in the province’s Retail Business Holidays Act or the Employment Standards Act.
Nonetheless, this doesn’t mean it will be business as usual in the GTA. Here is a list of what is open and closed on Monday, August 6.
Closed
- Government offices
- Banks
- Post office
Open
- Most major malls, some with reduced hours
- Most grocery stores, some with reduced hours
- Movie theatres
- Select LCBO stores
- Tourist attractions including CN Tower, ROM, the AGO and Canada’s Wonderland
Public transit will mostly run on a holiday schedule, check your local transit provider’s website for more details. Trains and buses will arrive less frequently than they do during regular weekday hours.
